About Lilly Pulitzer

Lilly Pulitzer was always a go-getter with an eye for fashion and a yearning for fun in the sun. Moving full-time to Palm Beach, Florida in the 1950s, Lilly wanted to be an entrepreneur outside of her husband, Peter Pulitzer’s, realm of business. So she set out into the bustling streets of Palm Beach and created her very own juice stand!

Lilly’s juice stand flourished. But here’s the thing: fruit can be very messy. Though delicious, the colorful fruit would often spray and stain her clothes. She needed an official uniform—a cute one, of course—to sell her juice in and allow room for some messiness. The result? A shift dress with colors that matched her citrus squeezes.

The juice stand was a success, but what her customers really craved was her sense of style. Later termed “Lilllys,” Pulitzer’s shift dress soon became the talk of the town and the socialite-must-have for all resort-goers.

Fast forward to today, and Lilly Pulitzer prints and apparel are a staple of sunshine fashion—whether that includes lounging in the sun or bringing a pop of warm color to a chilly town.
